1965 Sporting Motorist - England

Post by UNSAFE »

This is a British magazine from Feb 1965. It is larger than the basic magazine and barely fits on my scanner.

I wonder how much 3 shillings was worth back then ?

Thanks to Bill Mitchell, the Corvair was so far ahead of its contemporaries when it came to styling. Classic lines that are still appealing 45 years later! The color photo on the mag above is proof positive.

I really like that gold. I'm definitely going to consider it next time I paint.

Back then, the pound sterling was worth about US$ 2.40; there were 12 pence to a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound, or 240 pence to the pound - so, one British penny was worth about the same as one American cent. (Remember, this was BEFORE the UK went to the decimal pound in 1970.)

Therefore, 3/0 (three shillings) was worth 36¢ in 1965. It would buy about two pounds worth of hamburger, half-a-pound of sirloin steak, a gallon of gasoline, or a quart bottle of Rheingold beer. Also, a week's worth of most medium-sized daily city newspapers such as the Springfield (Mass.) Union, two issues of a Superman comic book with 6¢ left over, or seven rolls of LifeSavers candy. Two loaves of GOOD bread, not that Wonder Bread crap, but Arnold's or Pepperidge Farm. Two draft beers at the local watering hole.
