Jerry and Brad, you have it figured incorrectly. When a hole in metal is heated it expands. Since the thermal expansion rate for aluminum is higher than steel, this makes the sparkplug hole expand faster than the sparkplug itself. Think about when you have a rusted/stuck bolt, you heat the nut or whatever the bolt is in so that the hole expands and releases the bolt. It is common for people to misunderstand and think the hole will shrink, but that is not true.

I realize that the different metals expand and shrink at different rates as they are heated or cooled, and the clearances will vary during this process. I just felt that the interference fit at different points is hard go guess as the rate of heating or cooling varies. The maximum clearance between the two components is most-predictable and likely to occur when they are both stone cold.
