Re: John’s 65 sedan
Yep, I found several holes that were previously covered up with body filler. :banghead: I’m thinking that I have a decent pillar on the ‘66 donor, but again like on the passenger side, I’m going to first attempt cutting out the bad thinning and rusted out areas and repairing with fresh steel. Some ...

Re: pulley replacement. how to?
No. noted, will it hurt it to run it with the hole in it or no? Many don't run ANY lower shrouds. The lower shrouds and thermostat attempt to keep the engine temperature in a design temperature range. So will it hurt the engine to have no shrouds or thermostats? Not great for the engine, but if you...

Re: Steering Wheel, Side mirror and switch under dash on 69 monza
WOW -- the carburetor tags are still attached. That's uncommon now. Yes the engine code was stamped next to the VIN number. The "RW" suffix was used for the 1968 models, NOT used on the 1969 model year engines - AFAIK. See -- https://www.tpocr.com/corvairec.html Keep in mind that some 1969...

You'll need some solid West coast engine tin. Check with Jeff at California Corvair.

Re: pulley replacement. how to?
at that point i might as well jack the rear of the car up and drop the whole motor out... would make cleaning it easier. there is a LOT of built up aluminium corrosion, the rotor wont even come off the dizzy. the points arent corroded though... which is odd. if the whole thing is out i can paint ev...

Re: Steering Wheel, Side mirror and switch under dash on 69 monza
I guess not having a 69 motor may be a good thing since its not smog. I bought six new, in-box GM cylinder+piston sets, not realizing they were domed smog pistons. I wonder if anyone will want smog pistons. Might be good for a weird high compression build, but who wants cast pistons for that...? Th...

Re: Hello from SoCal
I do most of my own work, except for stuff I send to the machine shop. Bruce at Engine Machine in Inglewood, Calif does most of the Corvair head work in S. Calif. He's been around for years. He can bore cylinders, rebuild rods, check a crank, etc. I suspect you'll find that Mark Wright will just wan...

Re: New trans, new leaks
Hey all, I had the power train out and replaced the manual transmission. While in there, I replaced the input shaft seal, and clutch, throw out bearing and all gaskets (all from Clark’s). It all looked very good. Put it back together and it’s leaking trans fluid like a Siv! Expensive GL-4 oil dripp...

Re: Steering Wheel, Side mirror and switch under dash on 69 monza
Good luck with the car. If the engine runs fine I'd just enjoy it. After all these decades it's difficult to say exactly what configuration the engine is in. Definitely use premium fuel. If the engine doesn't run well, I'd go with a pair of 1965 model carburetors and distributor. One of the reasons ...

Re: New guy. Put a deposit down on a 64 Spider Coupe.
I have given up on cars I wanted, when I could not find a good example. Gbullman makes some good points. Also note that many West coast Corvairs end up back east and they are garaged and taken care of. One of the advantages of keep in touch with Corvair clubs is they sometimes know of a good car tha...

Re: pulley replacement. how to?

That engine block number looks like the VIN number. You can check it against your cars VIN plate. The black plate with the white printing is for an emissions control engine. the "U" hole is for the air injection pipe to pass through. It should be replaced with a plate from a non emissions ...

Re: Hello from SoCal
When I was young and lived in apartments I had to pass on a few great cars I wanted to buy since I didn't have a place to work on them. I see why you are looking for shop to work on your car. I finally got to a point that I could rent, then buy, a house so I had a garage to work on my old cars. In t...

Re: Steering Wheel, Side mirror and switch under dash on 69 monza
The body tag indicates a black (Monza) interior with Garnet red paint (upper and lower car). The 03B indicates the car was built March, second week. The "A" is for factory accessories, but apparently this wasn't always completed in 69. Note some accessories could be dealer installed, but N...

Re: Steering Wheel, Side mirror and switch under dash on 69 monza
Well I'll be dipped! I got a telescoping steering column! Thanks guys. The chrome knob on the left #1 almost feels like a dimmer or rheostat switch and has a spring attached. The label black cap #2 thing is connected to that cable and twists. It goes up behind my speedo. I need to spend more time t...
