Re: John’s 65 sedan

WoW!! Lots of work to save a More Door especially. I would have to have a very high sentimental attachment or just a desire for a challenge to see if I could make it nice perhaps before I would even think about doing one this rusty. Kudos. More power to you. What you have done so far looks good and ...

Re: 3 Point seat belts in an EM

3 point belts can be done conventionally for front seat passengers in any early model non convertible car. The shoulder belt pivot needs to be mounted to the inside of the roof behind the drivers shoulder slightly just like similar belts in newer cars. This requires welding a substantial bolt to pla...

Re: Corvair Bellhousing ID

Nope. You need a proper late model PG bellhousing. Look at your first photo on the standard shift bellhousing and notice the round spot below the crank seal in the surface of the inside. This is a relief for late camshaft clearance. A Late Model PG b bellhousing will have the same recess in this loc...

Re: Should I buy this car?

13K sounds high for one that needs a paint job, but, engine, diff and suspension rebuild if done properly with all new wear parts could pretty easily cost 10K to have done. IF it is rust free and the described work has been done well (engine fully rebuilt, not just sealed and repaired for instance) ...

Re: How much paint is needed for a complete repaint ?

Depends on the paint, the color of the paint, and how much car will be painted with that paint. Body should be sealed before basecoats are applied so it is all one color when they are applied. This will save a lot of paint with some colors where coverage is an issue. When I paint a whole Corvair car...

Re: Revisiting the topic for a newbie - - - HIGH IDLE SPEED

The initial curb idle setting of the carbs is made when you adjust the fast idle cam setting the throttle lever on the second highest step of the fast idle cam and then adjusting the idle speed screw for .078 clearance (fuels section of the shop manual showing assembly and adjustments. This setting ...

Re: Revisiting the topic for a newbie - - - HIGH IDLE SPEED

Ok you adjust idle speed with the idle speed screws on both carbs. Disconnect the throttle rod coming from the trans from the carb cross shaft and reinstall the spring to hold the cross shaft toward idle position. Set timing and then balance the carbs. Once the carbs are balanced adjust both idle sp...

Re: Shifter tube

Engine is still in the body. I will start taking it out in the next few weeks. I will inspect transmission and motor mount after power train in on my work table. I know something is worn out or miss aligned due to the shifting tube almost hanging below the tunnel. Thanks for you input I somehow mis...

Re: Metal fuel inlet valve

I did not try to adjust the spring tension on the float, but it was exerting some small degree of pressure. Didn't see\feel any ridges on the float spring, hole looks clean and clear. I did check the floats for fuel, did not find any, I did not submerge the floats to check for a hole. Inlet valve l...

Re: Metal fuel inlet valve

Are you sure there is not any fuel in the float? Might have sprung a leak? Float level set at 1 13/64" (manual spec)? Inlet valve tight, clean, and well seated in carb top with little gasket in place? Warped venturi cluster base?

Hopefully new repros will be available soon. For now a good used tank or repairing the old is about the only choice besides using some other container to route fuel from.

Re: Shifter tube

The shift tube should be disconnected from the trans crossmember before removing the engine as should the clutch and throttle linkages, fuel line between main body and engine and a number of other things. not disconnecting all these things and then lowering the rear of the powertrain for engine remo...

Re: 1966 carburetor issue . . and another idle issue . .

The idle vents in the bottom of the carbs are open ay idle. If the little brackets and rubber flaps are positioned and adjusted properly, they will close just above idle speeds. They could still leak fuel if closed I am sure if there is enough raw gas running down in the carbs as only the little spr...
