Come on guys, the Corvair Preservation Society is a good cause. Besides who wouldn't want one of theses in the man cave, or in my case, the wife would probably hang it in the living room.

Contact Ken Hand. He's made his living fixing Corvairs for the past 30 years or so, including cyl heads.

The battery access door retainer fits there. It holds the lid open to service the battery. Steve Spilatro of Corvanatics reproduced some last year. The key coming out of the switch in any position is normal for cars of that era. Also, if the light switch is on, the lights work in all positions of the ignition switch. As Ted stated, make sure the light switch is assembled correctly.

The oil pickup is the screen filter. There is no gasket or o-ring on the dipstick tube

Use an awl to start the hole, then use a hot punch to get the hole to the correct size.

do you have a vacuum gauge? A vacuum gauge can be used to troubleshoot a variety of issues This link shows what different gauge readings indicate.

I would suggest that you drive over to the Corvair event in Helen Sat. morning. Ask around for Bill McColl or Bill Pritchet. There are probably others that could help you out.

In addition to the screwdriver slot many hose clamp screws are also hex drive. You might be able to use a socket, extension and universal to loosen it

I addition to what others have mentioned. I would replace the rubber grommet around the dipstick to keep the cooling airflow from escaping through the fan housing. I would also remove the rubber fuel hose from under the fan belt. If you loose a fan belt, there is a chance that it could cut the hose ...

What is the casting number on your heads? Sounds like you may have early heads and barrels.
