Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

It's been along time since I've been here. Life has been so busy and sad to say no time for the corvair, untill today :tu: I have had the engine ready to go back in for well over a month and the engine bay has been painted for that long as well. So today with the help of my brother we re-installed t...

Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

I have a bunch of parts in bound from clarks, the heads are back in my garage and they look brand new. I'll work on cleaning up the engine bay while I wait for the parts to arrive. I'll try to put up a few pics tomorrow.

Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

The heads are getting fixed. They should be ready for pick up monday I dropped them off last week. I had all the valve guides replaced and the valve seats checked. I'm pretty sure a few got replaced along with a few valves as well.I told the shop to do what ever they needed. I think I'm upto about $...

Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

To answer your questions, yes and yes. It had the same part number. My friend had several LM turbo head sets and we had quick discussion about barrel thickness, among otherthings and why they would not work. I got lucky the only early turbo head he had was the exact one I needed. These things are no...

Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

Well I took the heads to the machine shop today. I went ahead and bought a turbo head off my friend that was as far as I could tell in good shape. I told the machine shop to check the valve guide wear and do their valve seat test and let me know what they find for both. I was told by monday I'll hav...

I'll update the dimple situation when I have the guys at the shop look at that cylinder tomorrow. Just in cas...

Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

That ball bearing business is in #6, which had good compression. The damage looks old and as you can kindof see in one of the pics the piston is fine. I believe that must have been the reason for the rebuild in 1980 and a decision made to just put it back on, I wish I had a say back then but I was 8...

Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

Got a update and a definite cause for the no compression. Also found something weird I will have to figure out how to handle. Perhaps this head is no good look at the pics and tell me what you think. I'll pull the other head tomarrow night and see if any ball bearings passed through that side too :d...

Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

Well made some progress tonight. Not as easy as I thought, but I was working all by myself. The only problem is that the engine/trans-axel kind-of slipped off the jack when it was really close to the ground. So I had to allow it to go fully onto the driveway then drag it out from under the car. I on...

Re: Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

Thanks for all the replies guys and many thanks for all those cool repair guides. You all have boosted my confidence and I also feel the best approach is to drop the entire drivetrain. I have pulled alot of small block chevys and a couple volvo engines too, but this job is just different to me so I ...

Lost a cylinder, #2 DEAD!

Well after a few weeks of great fun with this car am I finally getting the real corvair experience. I think I have dropped a valve seat or it's become sloppy loose losing all my compression. I had to really tighten down the exhaust rocker to get it to stop banging around but I can still hear noise f...

Re: New from san diego

Thats some really cool stuff flat6, I may have to get some of those stickers and a plate frame. I have scanned the one photo that I had and am still looking for others. I did find a file that has reciepts and such for the car that goes back to 1976. Looks like in 1980 the car got a .30 over rebuild ...

Hey 855r, you wouldn't happen to have any early photos would you? I think vintage photos are super cool.

Yes I do have one, actually in the glove box of the car I can see about getting it on here. I'll ask my dad if he has anymore too. I'll work on that today.
