Re: New to site....just bought a Spyder!

Love your 1963 Spyder! I used to own a white 1963 Spyder convertible when I was a teenager back in 1970-1971. It was the 5th Corvair in our family: a 1961 Monza coupe (purchased NEW), 1965 Corsa convertible, 1962 Monza coupe, 1963 500 coupe (something of a parts car), and then the 1963 Spyder conver...

NEW MECHANICS: Engine Rebuilding & Maintenance Tips

A new Corvair owner wrote on the CORSA Facebook Web site that he was just about to start dismantling and rebuilding his first Corvair engine. He asked for tips and general guidelines from other Corvair owners to help him with his project. Here are a couple of things I wrote that I felt might be usef...

Removing Corvair Cylinder Heads

:dontknow:  :helpsos: Removing Corvair cylinder heads can sometimes be a real pain! I wrote some comments about this on the CORSA Facebook Web site, in response to another Corvair fan who was about to tear down his first Corvair engine (dirty and well-worn) and was asking for some tips. I felt ...

Re: Corvair of the Month August 2012

Here is a detail shot that shows how the exhaust exits under the body -- there are no cutouts in the body sheet metal for them. I hope that answers your question. By the way, whoever wins the Corvair of the Month competition in August, I believe that the other car should be reentered again. I would ...

Re: New in Mass

I think the local Corvair clubs are the key to getting you into Corvair ownership. Corvair owners do well by helping and advising each other. As you make friends in the clubs you will be sharing knowledge. Perhaps you can gain mechanical skill and knowledge by offering to help owners with their proj...

Re: New in Mass

You need to always remember that all Corvairs are from 43 to 52 years old, and ask yourself why you want to be a Corvair owner in the first place! Yes, they can serv as a "daily driver", and perform quite well in that role. But they ARE OLD and AGING, and like any complex mechanical device...

Re: Corvair of the Month August 2012

Ya know what... I've looked at both cars over and over again, and I love them both! I can't make up my mind between the two! That red coupe is gorgeous, and the photography is great too! With regard to the story and pictures of the power-train and engine detailing and rebuild -- I wonder if Jay Leno...

Re: Newbie Question

Good advice from the others. There some Corvair specialty mechanics around, including Bill Cotrofeld Automotive, Inc., America's Oldest Corvair Shop , in East Arlington, VT (about 200 miles from Boston), see Web site URL below, but I have never dealt with them personally (just saw their ad in the CO...

Re: New in Mass

I just spotted that same Corvair Monza that you first asked about (Craigslist) on eBay. eBay item no: 330775894966 That looks like one clean 1964 Monza convertible!!! There are numerous additional photos on the eBay listing of the underside of the car, tires, etc., in addition to the main photos. Th...

Re: New in Mass

Thank you. I sincerely hope that my opinions prove to be useful to you. I have been involved with Corvairs and owned Corvairs since the 1960's, and I've read a great deal of Corvair-related material during that time. My current 1966 Corvair is Corvair number 10. I'm simply trying to pass on to you e...

Re: New in Mass

Top is down in all photos so can't tell the condition of the convertible top. It top is a power top I believe it is a hydraulic system, so be sure to check its operation. This is a 1964 but looks like it has a 1963 front grill trim -- could have had prior front end collision damage, so check on the ...

Re: New in Mass

That 1964 Monza that you found on Craigslist certainly looks to be worth investigating, especially if the low mileage claim appears to be believable and the car appears to be rust-free! The 1964 was the best of the early Corvairs, with a 164CI engine and some significant refinements over the earlier...

Re: New in Mass

Welcome to the Corvair Forum! I was first stationed in Massachusetts and Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford from 1977 to 1980. I initially lived in Acton for about a year until I could move into base housing. I had a 1965 Corsa convertible back then, and had it repainted and a new top installed at a ...
