Re: Add Steering To Corvair Drivetrain

One might suggest your search could begin with the '80s Cord replicar that used a 'vair engine to drive the front wheels. On the other hand, one might well wonder why (beyond the classic "because I can") anyone would want to fabricate any front-drive racecar, let alone one with an engine w...

Re: LM headlight switch question

Mr.Bodie:

My apologies if this is a stupid/redundant question, but are the wiring diagrams excerpted above proprietary, or are they available for download in a larger file format? If so, where, please.

Thanks.

Re: Wheel/Tire question

While one could write a lengthy monograph on the unsuitability of rubber band-shod wagon wheels in the real world, one could fairly sum it up thusly: They are a hair-brained fad of form over function that work best, if at all, on solid axles or stupidly complex suspension systems. One day, they will...

Re: It's still just a Chevrolet.....

Well, there is that one thing... Static adjustment is a no-brainer with solid lifters that are always constant in their length, but hydraulic lifters are always a variable. As such, the only way to stabilize their "value", is to make sure they are pumped up to their normal running conditio...

Re: Extend

"Extend" has changed hands a couple times since Duro came out with it in the early 80s. At that time, I used it extensively and successfully on a 356 and it has maintained its integrity still to this day. Back then, it was only available as a liquid, so when a spray was appropriate, I used...

Re: What is this engine part?

One might opine that there are unresolved variables that should be addressed before making any quick decisions about pumping fuel. - How is the underdash switch wired in? It may be wired to the ign. side as an anti-theft measure, while leaving the interrupt switch to perform its safety function unha...

Re: Under coating???

One fellow's view: - De-rust, clean, and apply multiple coats of paint to all metal surfaces. - When paint is cured, apply (personal choice) multiple liberal coats of rubberized undercoating to the painted sheetmetal, which will provide a flexible, resilient, and easily repairable protection against...

Re: Cleaning - rust removal engine

Well, its all about personal preferences, so here is what I like: For the alloy case its hard to beat WD 40 (or Justice Bros., etc.) and a green or red ScotchBrite plus elbow grease. No wire brushes or devices used in a drill. Its best for the alloy to have a tight, smooth surface. If you've checked...

Re: Timing & Tuning & Pressure, OH MY!!

Hopefully, a real mechanic will correct my errors, so I would venture these observations about this thread, if I may. If you can't balance carbs, there is a problem and you must correct it before proceeding. A vacuum line not plugged, a carb jet that is , carbs subtly choked with deposits and crud l...

Re: disc brake conversion

Perhaps its the dream of dementia, but I seem to recall that the contemporary Sting Ray was an apt donor as long as you took everything (spindle castings, hubs, bearings, etc.).

Re: Safety shut-off Switch for electric fuel pumps

In the interests of maximum options, I would note that I am fond of a manual primary switch (with auto backup if you've a mind to). I like a nondescript item, perhaps with an "on" light, located close at hand, but not prominently. This way, I can not only shut it off quickly as need requir...

Re: Rusted heads?

Rust on the outside of cyl. is a problem because iron oxide acts as an insulation, thus retarding heat transfer. Clean 'em up and paint a hi-temp flat or semi-gloss (better longevity, less crud accumulation, easier to clean) black.

Keep 'em flying...

Re: problems with roller rockers

Used to be that the self-wrenchers all had a pair of cut-down rocker covers to minimize the oil mess of adjusting hydraulics while the engine is running, which is the best way to make sure they are pumped up properly.

Solids are set statically, in firing order.

Re: Reducing Oversteer?

(With the usual disclaimer of "one guy's opinion"....) Well, the short form is this: First the LM (being full IRS) is less prone to sudden behaviors than the swing-axled EM. Next, the presence of a limited-slip has implications. Then there is the business of tires; the currently fashionabl...

Re: How Bad is it to use fiberglass panels

Without putting too fine a point on it, fibreglass repair panels are never a good idea and seldom a workable short-term solution. Corvairs are of unit-body construction that relies on the strength of all of its body panels (particularly at high-stress points like rockers, pillars, pans, transition p...

Re: Reducing Oversteer?

While I understand your trepidation, I encourage you to approach your coming experiences as an opportunity to learn to actively drive a car, as opposed to the now-predominant exercise of passive guidance. In the hands of a reasonably conscious driver, oversteer can be a valuable asset to artful car ...
