Re: Correct transaxle fluid?

FWIW, Paul Cangialosi, author of "How to Build and Modify High Performance Manual Transmissions" has mentioned in at least one of his videos (GearBoxVideo on youtube) he has seen no detrimental effects on synchros with long term use of GL5 gear oil.

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Marty, it has about 150k on it currently. I would think a problem as major as you suggest would cause problems throughout the rpm band, not just at specific parts. If the gear has not slipped much, the car is still drivable but won't act "normal". Here's a few signs of a slipped gear: Har...

Re: Engine Troubles... Please Help

Like Brad suggests, I would do a compression test. Does this engine have a lot of miles on it? Given your symptoms, I think I would put the engine on #1 TDC and drop the oil pan, and check that the cam timing mark is at the case halves. Several of your symptoms suggest a sheared key in the crank or ...

Re: Spark plug oddity

I don't think a Big Sert is going to work, the sleeve looks like it has a larger diameter than the maximum size hole for a Big Sert. From the manufacturer: The stripped hole should not be larger than 16.8mm or .660 inches. I agree with toytron that it looks to be an anti-fouler, but I also have neve...

Re: "65 rear spindle removal

The J-21831 tools are usually used for servicing the hub while on the car. Since you have yours on the bench, you can do the needed repairs with a press. This document might help: http://1969corvair.com/techpages/techfi ... ar_Hub.pdf

BillMC

If you ground the shim down to .125 (instead of .122) isn't your end play now .009 according to your info?

Re: rear wheel bearing spacer

Yes, you want to use a smaller shim to reduce the bearing free play. I try to get about .003. This picture might help: rear wheel bearing.jpg Here's the article that picture is from, it's a good read by Bob Ballew. https://www.corvair.org/chapters/corvanatics/files/documents/manuals/Diff-man.pdf HTH...

Hello ossieoz

Is your Greenbrier a manual or powerglide? Do you know what ring and pinion ratio you have?

Re: The overall reliability of the Corvair drivetrain

Does anyone have a recommendation for Corvair engine work here in the greater Seattle area? Hello Mark The Seattle area has 2 active Corvair clubs that can help you find some help with your car. Contact Danny Davis, one of the western directors of CORSA at mr.dan.davis@outlook.com regarding hooking...

Think what you like, but my friend in Sandy asked me to make contact with the OP after I offered my opinion. There is no conspiracy or plot to low ball the OP.

Hello Mherriford

Where abouts in Oregon is the car? My opinion is the market is pretty soft here in the Pacific Northwest for Corvairs, but your car does have potential being a CORSA.

Re: Harvey Aluminium flywheel

How much does that aluminum flywheel weigh? You can take a bunch of weight off a stock flywheel. I have done that in a couple of my cars with no problems taking off and much better acceleration. One is an 85hp (yes EM automatic engine) and the other a 110hp. I read the above mentioned text just a f...

Re: Harvey Aluminium flywheel

Just a follow up: Harvey Aluminum also made a lightweight aluminum contact ring for the Corvair pressure plate as well. They're apparently much rarer than the flywheels, I have only seen one in all my years of playing with Corvairs. I bought the one I saw and it's in my autocross car along with the ...

Re: Harvey Aluminium flywheel

I have been using one of those flywheels for about 10 years in my 67 autocross car. It definitely improves acceleration, but you'll have to get used to a bit more RPMs and slower clutch engagement on takeoff. They are somewhat rare, I've probably only seen a dozen or so over the last 20 years. One t...

Re: Carburetors for a 63 turbo

Miniman, I’ve got my 180 broken down. Plans where to rebuild the YH/turbo and refresh the stock exhaust. But, I hate the idea of spending good money on the stock configuration. Going to go back through all the links and review the megasquirt again. Would like to see the strong improvements you ment...
