Re: putting a '63 102-4spd into a '65 monza convertible
I forgot the oil cooler. You may have a 8 plate on your 63 and and a 12 plate on your 65 140. You probably want the 12 plate oil cooler to match the 65 rear duct and the 65 top shroud to match the 12 plate oil cooler and inspection cover. If you want the 8 plate cooler and top shroud you can modify ...

Re: putting a '63 102-4spd into a '65 monza convertible
You should use your 65 differential and transmission. You would use a LM seal in the differential snout to fit your 65 input shaft. You should use the 63 flat flywheel with the 63 crankshaft. You should use the 63 flat finger pressure plate to match the 63 flywheel. The 63 bell housing should stay w...

Re: How dumb is it to reuse piston rings on a engine being rebuilt?
Since only cast pistons are available for EM engines I don't have to go into a litany about forged piston clearance recommendations these days. Usually there has to be some carbon ridge near the cylinder top. above how far the top ring reaches. The cylinder generally needs a honing pattern to help s...

Re: EM - Axle rubbing on A-Arm opening
Thank you for posting your follow-up. From what I gather your changes with the spring mounts changed the camber but had little affect on the axle through the A-arm hole location. It seems the different transmission mounts may have had an affect on the axle through the A-arm hole location but you may...

Re: How dumb is it to reuse piston rings on a engine being rebuilt?
I wasn't going to reply yesterday about whether or not to use EM pistons and/or rings again. All I can say today is I like to use moly rings on a high performance engine and cast iron rings on a regular engine and I do not use chrome rings. This general ring choice opinion does not speak to cylinder...

Re: Engine rebuild
I'm waiting forever locally for Machine Shop services. I found a motorcycle shop to do cylinders with plates I have on loan but it's expensive. I don't trust sizing on off the shelf cylinders. I've been unable to find another person to do heads. No one wants to invest in tooling for flycutting head ...

Re: EM - Axle rubbing on A-Arm opening
Sitting here I would imagine positive camber would make the axle move towards the bottom of the A-arm hole and negative camber would move it towards the top of the A-arm hole. I also imagine that the height of the powertrain would have more of an affect on where the axle is located in the hole than ...

Re: Puzzled by Leak down test results and next steps
I don't know what happened but it seems like we used to change spark plugs first thing. Maybe it's because the new cars can go so long or maybe it's because they're 5 bucks apiece for regular plugs these days.

Re: WTB Six NOS LM STD Barrels
If I bump it out to .004 or so (.002 on each side) with forged pistons I don't notice any piston slap either.
On a somewhat related related note, I sure take apart a lot of engines that have the piston arrow pointing to the harmonic balancer and not to the front of the engine.

Re: Changing Transmission Mounts
It's been a while but I don't think it will be too bad. If memory serves, it's easier to get to the top of the bolts on a LM than on a EM. At least these days you don't have to worry about core value if cutting the nuts off. If your 66 is a Manual I'd disconnect the shifter yoke at the transmission ...

Re: No more Bando 3V560 fan belts???
A while back I looked for Dayco top cog belts and couldn't find them anymore either. They're 10mm so a little wider than 3/8. One fellow bought what was supposed to be a top cog but it arrived with inner cogs which I don't care for. I bought a batch of Gates 3V560 on Ebay a while back to last for a ...

Re: Corvair Preservation Proclamation
It will certainly be interesting to see how this all pans out. Formal declaration or hostile takeover are some heady terms. I'm awaiting election returns with bated breath. I haven't seen much for polls or projections. Discussion of a donation to CPF by Corvair Minnesota fell flat because it seems t...

Re: WTB Six NOS LM STD Barrels
I would not think of Clarks full fin cylinders as "thicker barrels". The fins go all the way around the studs so they're more stable. That's how VW cylinders are. I believe it's a classic case of GM doing it right to begin with and then doing it cheaper. The problem with using '60 3 3/8 cy...

Re: New to ALL THIS! just got this 62 Corvair Monza 900
bbodie52 is absolutely correct that the duct on the right front of the top shroud needs a hose or the opening blocked off with a plate made by tracing the duct onto a piece of sheet metal. If you have a big hole there for the cooling air to escape the engine will suffer in a big way. I can't tell if...

Re: Puzzled by Leak down test results and next steps
I would not expect the carburetor tuning to change much with the new spark plugs but it wouldn't hurt to fiddle with them if you'd like. I like to write down changes in case I want to go back and forgot where I was. I wasn't thinking the #2 lifter adjustment would be related to the smoke, I was thin...
