Re: New to Corvairs: Just purchased a 66 Corsa
That does not appear to be corrosion from sitting. It looks like salted roads corrosion. When I was a kid I had a brand new first gen Camaro in the Mid West and it developed rot like your car has in only FOUR YEARS! The Camaro had a front sub-frame bolted to a rear unibody. The unibody corrosion was...

Re: Overheated
Its got an alternator but I'm not sure how its wired up. Take a good picture of the rear of the alternator (were the wires are) and post it and we can tell you if it is original style, or upgraded internal regulator style. The internal regulator style is so popular on GM cars of the era a number of...

Re: Overheated
There are Gates 3VX560 Belts for sale on Amazon. The reviews say it's perfect for the 65 Corvair. The belt that just went south was from Clarks, it had at most 1000 miles on it. I check the tension every time I take it out and thought it could have been just the littlest bit too tight but wasn't re...

Re: EM - Axle rubbing on A-Arm opening
This has been an interesting thread to follow.
I finally recalled an issue like this. I'm not saying this is you're problem, but the car with an issue had been in an accident and the drivetrain support at the transmission was BENT. Not common, but apparently it happens.

Re: Overheated
With some luck you may have no issues. Changing the oil and filter is a good idea. Recently someone posted about the Clark's fan belts stretching and breaking. I had the same issue last year. Clark's posted they have gone to a newer/better fan belt. Keep in mind fan belts do degrade from age, just l...

Re: New to Corvairs: Just purchased a 66 Corsa
There are two types of engine fix opinions: 1 - If it is running good just fix the issue and motor on. 2 - Rebuild it completely since after decades who knows what was done and if you take it all apart to check, then you might as well do a proper rebuild and not worry about it. The difference in cos...

Re: Seat Foam suppliers
About a decade back I ordered the seat foam for a 66 from Clark's and the labels said "American Seat Cushion". So far they have stood up very well. Firm and no signs of deterioration. Some background here is needed. Decades ago a buddy with a bunch of children decided he needed to re-uphol...

Re: Compatibility
Good comment Frank. Yes there should be no washers on lower bolts, but even without washers there is a clearance problem with 60-63 bellhousing lower bolts with a 64-69 crankshaft. More wear in the crankshaft thrust surface will aggravate the problem. One fellow with a 66 engine in his 63 car would ...

Re: CORSA BOD playing games on the CCF?
Jim --- I was surprised that the CORSA directors are volunteers and maybe too much is being expected of volunteers. If folks want CORSA to be professional (fair, balanced, and held to standards), then they have to pay folks to run it like a professional company. I'm now sure if that is fiscally poss...

Re: Loose Deep Valve Seats
If I remember right it is 356 aluminum alloy. Interesting point that sunken head gaskets are a sign of aluminum that has gone soft but if I threw away all the heads I have with that condition I wouldn't have many left. Yes I have had "minor" indentation heads rebuilt. You can use thicker ...

Re: Compatibility
Someone above said the LM crankshaft is longer but the seal surface area is shorter. Jim Brandberg Isanti, MN CorvairRepair.com Jim - AFAIK the longer stroke 64-69 crankshaft is the same overall length as the earlier shorter stroke crankshaft. The crank gear pressed on the crankshaft is different. ...

Re: Compatibility
snip All these changes were done because at higher RPM the pre-64 pressure plate had a tendency to loose clamping pressure do to centrifugal force (especially when releasing the clutch after a shift). I think it is the opposite. Due to centripetal force, when the clutch was released at high RPMs, t...

Re: Compatibility
As Craig mentioned you will need the 64 bellhousing for a 66 engine. In 64 the bigger engine had a crankshaft gear that was revised to move the flywheel just enough to accommodate the new stepped flywheel and revised pressure plate AND throwout bearing. All these changes were done because at higher ...

Occasionally I'll contact Steve. Great person. Yes he doesn't post much now. Many of the experienced and knowledgeable folks have stopped posting over the years due to argumentative and rude behavior common on many forums. As we used to say in aerospace "Don't fall in love with your own idea an...

Re: Loose Deep Valve Seats
This was a good exchange of information and ideas. Thanks for the comments on the 140 heads and turbo. Just my :my02: , but the deep seat increases contact area with the head and IMPROVES surface tension, but has it's limits. That said it is the only COST EFFECTIVE solution with a good track record ...

Re: Info wanted: 1965 frunk lid CORVAIR placement
The Corvette always had a floor shifter, but most people never drove a Corvette. But they might have driven many foreign cars with a floor shift. Just ignore those few with a four speed column shifter. So, yes, Corvair brought back the every manual transmission in this economy car, wait, VW B...
