Re: 140 vacuum leak
I think Brad's analysis is correct. I'll add that the secondary carburetor(s) are notorious for sticking throttle plates due to gasoline drying in the throat and gumming up the throttle plate shaft. Three causes: 1) - Opening up the throttle wide open BRIEFLY (especially if the accerator pump cup is...

Re: tires for 13 inch stock wheels ('64 Monza)
Brad - A good article. The author said "Revolutions per mile. Stock is 853 (to 65) and 833 (66-69 and wagons) revs/mile, according to Chevy specs. Oddly enough, the calibration for the speedometer doesn't quite match - the '66 up speedos are set for 825 revs/mile. " Not odd - it was common...

Re: jumps out of high gear
Brad - I'll have to tell Dan the site you got - LOL!! Dan is a real Luddite, no cell, no computer, and no answering machine. Yeah he's a character, but always helps out a Corvair person. Dan has been in the South Coast Corsa club (one of three in L.A. Ca. ) for decades and word of mouth has kept him...

Re: jumps out of high gear
After installing new shift rod coupling and checking for looseness anywhere it still jumped. So I removed the power train again and switched back to the original tranny. With all in place, it works great, it does NOT jump out of hi gear at all. However, the lower gears are quite whiny but shift wel...

Re: Pinion gear shim size
Hi 66vairguy Thank you for the reply, I'm no expert in these matters, I just systematically plug away at what I'm busy with and with forum/manual help I normally get things done. Being analytically minded I sometimes over analyse/complicate matters. The "over rev" statement refers, curren...

Re: Pinion gear shim size
I did my pinion shim by trial and error. Having a pinion bearing machined by a machine shop to slip-fit off the end of the shaft makes the job MUCH easier, otherwise you have to press the bearing on and off several times. Clark's sells a shim kit with various sizes. I had mine apart and back togeth...

Re: Electrical Connectors
the "twin lock" housing in the engine compartment is listed on Clark's page Brad posted - C5239 and c5238. Same connectors are used at the LM dash harness to instrument cluster harness, but Clark's doesn't state that. Darn - I goofed on that one - the c5238 and c5239 is the EM 8 pin conne...

Re: tires for 13 inch stock wheels ('64 Monza)
I've heard that 185 / 80/13 are only to be used on trailers and car dollies. I went to buy him the other day and when I told him I wanted to put them on my Corvair he closed the book and said I won't sell them to you they're not made for a car NOT TRUE - Trailer tires (IN ANY SIZE) cannot be used o...

Re: Pinion gear shim size
Wow - O.K. a lot going on here. First why do you think the engine is "over revving" ? Unlike modern engines that are happy to slowly turn over under load in overdrive, the Corvair engine was designed to operate around 2.500 - 3,000 RPM at 60MPH (96KPH) all day long. I would not operate a C...

Clark's sells the twin lock terminals and Corvair connector housings.
Support your Corvair vendor or they will stop carrying parts like these.

Re: So How Much Are Differentials Worth These Days?
If your 4 pinion setup has been in use since the 70's and is quiet then I agree with notched, it should be acceptable to most. As far as a price for a differential. Nowadays there is so much worn "junk" out there, that most buyers will only pay decent money if they do a good inspection. Th...

I forgot to mention that Clark's Corvair also sells the connectors and housings. Convenient when you only need a few connectors and are ordering other things from Clark's.

Re: Electrical Connectors
Brad posted some great information. A few suggestions - 1. You will need the correct tool to install the connectors on the wire. Beware of places that sell "one size fits all". You'll ONLY get good results with the proper (specialized) tool. Also get the tools to remove the connectors from...

Re: So How Much Are Differentials Worth These Days?
First - What year is the transaxle and transmission? The 66-69 four speed transmission does not fit correctly on a 65 differential (you can force it, but it will fail). So you have to state if the differential is for a 65 or 66-69 transaxle. Second - A properly rebuilt and GUARANTEED differential is...
